Protecting Muscle Mass While Losing Weight on a GLP-1
We've talked about why your food choices (nutrition) still matters and how to manage early side effects. Let's tackle something that doesn't get talked about enough: muscle.
As we lose weight it can be easy (and hopeful) to assume it's all fat. But weight loss — especially more rapid weight loss — can include muscle too. The good news is that with a few intentional choices, you can protect it.
Why does muscle loss happen?
When you're eating less overall (which is common and expected on a GLP-1), your body has less fuel to maintain everything, including muscle. so it is normal to break down muscle tissue alongside fat as part of that weight loss.
This isn't a flaw in the medication — it's simply what tends to happen with any significant weight loss unless steps are taken to help protect muscle along the way.
Why muscle matters more than people realize
Muscle isn't just about strength. It plays a big role in:
· Your metabolism — muscle is metabolically active tissue, so losing too much of it can make weight maintenance harder down the line
· Everyday function — strength, balance, and mobility all rely on it
· Long-term success — preserving muscle now supports better results if you ever reduce your dose or stop the medication
How to protect it through your food choices
Make protein a priority at every meal. When you are deciding what to have at a meal, start with the protein first. Good options include eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, poultry, tofu, cottage cheese, and protein shakes or smoothies if solid food is harder to manage.
Eat your protein first. If your appetite runs out quickly, eating the protein portion of your meal before anything else helps make sure it doesn't get crowded out.
Spread protein across the day. We often eat most of our daily protein for dinner. With a GLP-1 we need to try and include it at every meal and snack across the day This supports your body's ability to use it effectively.
Movement matters too
Nutrition is only part of the picture. Some form of muscle-challenging movement — like simple strength or resistance exercises at least twice a week — works alongside eating
enough protein to help preserve muscle. You don't need a gym membership or heavy weights to start; bodyweight exercises or light resistance bands are effective too.
The takeaway
Protecting muscle while losing weight isn't automatic — but it is very achievable. Prioritising protein and adding some movement and strength exercises can make a real difference in how you look, feel, and maintain your results long term.
